As a part of our ambassador program, we’d like to introduce the ambassador of the month, Elisabeth Martin. Adva met Elisabeth while visiting NYC last April, as she was taking yoga and Pilates classes and joined a friend who is taking Elisabeth’s excellent Pilates class (at Balanced Pilates). They later shared a beautiful afternoon practicing together in Central Park.
Q: Hi Elisabeth, tell me a little bit about you
Elisabeth: I am a freelance dancer and Pilates teacher based in New York. I am originally from Bloomington, Indiana where I started ballet as a child. I attended Indiana University for college. While in school I became a certified Pilates instructor, I have had the opportunity to work in many different dance styles, ranging from improve modern, all the way to classical ballets.
Q: How and when did you start practicing yoga/Pilates?
Elisabeth: As a dancer I grew up with yoga and Pilates, offered as a form of cross training. In high school I had an ankle surgery and for my rehabilitation I was put onto a Pilates reformer, and it changed my life! In college I started going to weekly yoga classes as a way to restore my body and also to get away from the stress of schoolwork.
Q: What does practicing yoga/Pilates mean to you? In what aspect did it improve your life?
Elisabeth: While I’m in the studio that time is all mine, I get to focus on my inner needs. Whether it’ll be stretching out sore muscles, regulative exercises, or simply quoting my mind from the hustle and bustle of life in New York City! It's time I can take to tune into my needs and the needs of my body. As a dancer I spend much of my time putting my body through its paces, and lending my body to the art form. Pilates is my body’s reward for everything I put it through. Pilates has helped me not only to rehab after injury, but also has lengthened out the slight twist of my spine (making me taller by 2 inches!). It has given my body an internal strength and confidence in the everyday movement of life.
Q: What kind of yoga do you practice?
Elisabeth: In college, I did mostly Hatha and Bikram yoga. But now my practice is more of a Vinyasa flow style. I mostly practice a home so it just some of my favorite flows I have taken in the past, focusing on the points in which I need to strengthen and stretch.
Q: What is the most important thing for you in your yoga/Pilates outfit?
Elisabeth: Being comfortable! I mostly like long leggings and t-shirts. Nothing too baggy to get in the way, but something that breaths and I can move with, I am also a huge fan of layers on top because I sweat!
Q: What made you become a Ripple ambassador?
Elisabeth: Since I met Adva and have been wearing the Ripple Yoga Wear pieces around, I have people asking me all the time where I got them, and I want to share it with everyone I know!
Q: What is your favorite Ripple piece?
Elisabeth: Most defiantly the leggings, I can't wear them enough, they go with almost any top and look great with a long sweater thrown over on top!
